Malcolm Job to retire as General Manager

"On July 1st 1998 I joined TTBS as the then new General Manger, working in tandem with Pauline Glover for a month at the old offices in Stratford upon Avon. This was not my first encounter with TTBS as I remember a year earlier going along to a fund raising ‘auction of promises’ at Hampton in Arden where I ended up helping to do the washing up after the buffet. Little did I realise at that time that a short time later I would join TTBS full time.

It has been a wonderful and challenging 13 years during which I have met some truly inspiring people both amongst the beneficiaries and supporters. Having stayed on for 2 years beyond normal retirement age I now feel I would like to spend more time on hobbies and visiting my far flung family so I am happy to hand on the baton of General Manager to Ivan Savage knowing I am leaving the TTBS in safe hands. I would therefore wish to thank everyone connected with TTBS for making my period at the Society such a happy and rewarding time. Good luck to you all."

Ivan Savage New General Manager

With Malcolm Job, TTBS General Manager since 1998, set to retire at the end of June this year the Trustees have appointed Ivan Savage, previously Group Sales Director at Carver (Wolverhampton) Ltd and Director of Engineered Timber Solutions Ltd, Rodington, Shrewsbury, to be the new TTBS General Manager.  Ivan, who was Midlands TTBS President in 2008 and has served as Midlands TTBS treasurer for many years, will join full time in April and will work in tandem with Malcolm for 3 months before taking over fully from July 2011.

Ivan has recently celebrated 50 years in the Timber industry, originally on the South coast with A. Olby & Sons Ltd (now part of the Cover Group), moving to Cox Long Ltd at Stafford in 1976 (now part of the Walker Group) and subsequently as a Director with S. Jackson (Walsall) Ltd which was purchased by Carvers in August 1993. He was appointed as a Director on the Carver Board in 1994 and was the first non-family Director in their then nearly 100 year history. He retired in November 2008, but continued as a Director of ETS Ltd and on a sales consultancy basis with the main Carver timber business. He fully retired from the Carver Group at the end of February to prepare alongside Malcolm for the TTBS handover.

For much of the 1980’s and 90’s, Ivan was heavily involved in distance running and triathlons throughout the UK and since 1998 has served on the Wolverhampton City Marathon Organising Committee and was Chair and Administrator in 2009 and 2010, as well as being a Trustee of the marathon registered charity. This Carver Group sponsored annual event has directly raised over £225,000 for local organisations to assist the less fortunate in the West Midlands region.

    QUIZ NIGHT TESTS TIMBER IQ

Some of the finest brains in the North East timber trade were collected together under one roof recently for a Quiz Night in The Sir Bobby Robson Suite at St James’ Park, the home of Newcastle United Football Club.

Nearly 40 people enjoyed an evening of head-scratching and flashes of genius along with liquid refreshment and a welcome break for a pie and pea supper.  The event raised nearly £100 for TTBS with the prizes kindly donated by BSW Timber.

Teams from M H Southern Ltd, Gill & Robinson Ltd, Robert Duncan Timber Products, BSW Timber, Lathams, Tweedside Timber, Joseph Thompson, J F Potts & Son and Rowlinsons took part.

The Quiz started with a picture board of 20 famous Geordies before 65 further general knowledge questions were tackled. They ranged from ‘How did Chesley Sullenberger achieve fame in January 2009?’ (he landed his plane on the Hudson River) to ‘What is the Prime Minister’s constituency?’ (Witney).

In a hard fought contest the team from Gill & Robinson in Newcastle  - Ian Robinson, Chris Davidson, David Bland and Joan Grant - emerged as winners (pictured).

Organiser James Southern said: “Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening and I have to say that it was a pleasant surprise to discover just how clever North East timber traders are!  We are very grateful to BSW Timber for donating the prizes. TTBS North East plan to hold the event again next year which gives everyone plenty of time to start swotting up!”
